Continuous 12-Step attendance (weekly or more frequent) over 3 years predicted sustained abstinence over three years. Across recovery stages, individuals were 4.1 to 8.6 times more likely to achieve sustained abstinence by continuous 12-Step meeting attendance and involvement. Recent studies have indicated that involvement in AA influenced recovery was mostly measured as abstinence and reduced alcohol use through the social and spiritual change mechanisms [103]. The achieved results have confirmed that another mechanism underlies the relationship between involvement in self-help groups and subjective well-being among the alcohol-addicted exists. Kelly spoke about the experience and outcomes of adolescents in 12-Step programs. Although it is a common practice for treatment facilities to refer teens to 12-Step programs, the effectiveness of 12-Step programs with this population is not often studied.

There’s a lot of work to be done, and we need each other if we are to be effective. For some perspective on how we handled that dilemma, one more look at AA history is helpful. Frequently wrote and spoke about was what he called the “tenstrike” of AA—the wording of the Third and Eleventh Steps.

At some point during the meeting a basket is passed around for voluntary donations. AA’s 7th tradition requires that groups be self-supporting, “declining outside contributions”.[14] Weekly meetings are listed in local AA directories in print, online and in apps. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried understanding the dangers of alcohol to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs. “Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.” NA meetings are one of the major parts of the Narcotics Anonymous recovery program.

Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs. The 12-step philosophy was first introduced by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as a way of life and a path to recovery from alcoholism. It has since been adopted by many other types of addiction recovery groups, including NA and Cocaine Anonymous (CA), among others. Anyone can drop in an open meeting, including friends and relatives, community members, and college students studying substance abuse.

A bigger sample could give an opportunity to verify if sex, religious involvement, other addictions, or diseases play a moderating role between involvement in AA and meaning of life/hope. In addition, it is important to verify whether the presented model of recovery could be employed to other self-help groups dedicated to both substance and behavioural addictions, such as drug addicts, gamblers, sex addicts, workaholics, etc. The Alcoholics Anonymous Involvement Scale (AAIS) was used to assess lifetime AA attendance [88]. Additionally, participants were asked about steps completed in alcohol treatment, about steps “worked”, about quantity of meetings attended in the last year, and total number of meetings ever attended. In the research, questions were asked regarding participation in any alcohol treatment, spiritual awakening as a consequence of involvement in AA, total number of meetings, and number of steps “worked”.

This step of recovery involves actively monitoring behavior and being willing to admit and rectify mistakes as they happen. Imperfection and setbacks are expected, but staying accountable and honest can keep people from falling back into old habits. During this step, people offer apologies, try to fix the harm they caused, or ask for forgiveness. It is important to note that this is only if it will not cause further harm to the other person and with the understanding that being forgiven is not guaranteed. This step encourages those in recovery to talk about their mistakes and weaknesses.

The goal is to create a safe environment where people addicted to substances can connect with each other and support each other’s recovery. Members meet regularly to share their experiences and support each other to quit drugs. For people struggling with opioid use, one recovery tool that’s been available for decades is Narcotics Anonymous (NA). This free program provides support in the form of regular group meetings and fellowship with other people with addictions.

When our members identify as “addicts and alcoholics” or talk about “sobriety” and living “clean and sober,” the clarity of the NA message is blurred. The implication in this language is that there are two diseases, that one drug is separate from another, so a separate set of terms is needed when discussing addiction. At first glance this seems minor, but our experience clearly shows that the full impact of the NA message is crippled by this subtle semantic confusion. At first glance, it may seem as though your choice between AA and NA should be an obvious one. However, as you dig deeper, you’ll realize that’s not the case at all.

Rather than converting the First Step in a natural, logical way (“we admitted that we were powerless over drugs…”), they made a radical change in that step. They wrote, “We admitted that we were powerless over our addiction…”  Drugs are a varied group of substances, the use of any of which is but a symptom of our disease. When addicts gather and focus on drugs, they are usually focusing on their differences, because each of us used a different drug or combination of drugs. The one thing that we all share is the disease of addiction. With that single turn of a phrase, the foundation of the Narcotics Anonymous Fellowship was laid.

NA believes in an abstinence model of recovery, which means being completely drug free. But if you’re addicted to opioids, you may be taking buprenorphine maintenance therapy (BMT). The group’s official position is that the only criteria for membership is a desire to stop using drugs. It means that existential well-being is a significant factor in achieving happiness, operationalized as subjective well-being. As the founders of Narcotics Anonymous adapted our steps, they came up with a “tenstrike” of perhaps equal importance.

It suggests that in AA, the lack of control is due to the alcohol, while in NA, the lack of control is due to the actual addiction itself. One is external (alcohol) and one is internal (addiction). This difference has led to many people concluding that NA is more focused on the individual, rather than focusing on the assistance of a Higher Power, which is a major part of The Twelve Steps in AA. For many, this approach is appealing because they may not feel comfortable discussing a Higher Power and its influence in their lives. Instead, they may feel that the responsibility lies completely with them and that they need to, in a sense, get out of their own way if they’re ever going to be free from their addictions.

Even 15 years into his recovery, Marlon still attends AA meetings about five times per week. Marlon checked into a 30-day treatment facility, where addiction relapse he learned more about Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). He bought into the program and the idea of a fellowship where people helped one another.

Depending on where you live, there should be many options to choose from.

You may not get the full benefits of actively taking part in meetings. Some other members may informally try to get you to stop your BMT. The sample study was relatively small, and the bootstrapping method was used as a good solution in case of normally distributed variables. The small sample size was why it did not add to model-controlled variables.

Limited research suggests that use of psychedelic drugs does not typically lead to addiction, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Ongoing studies supported by the federal agency are exploring whether they can be used to treat substance use disorders. This step requires you to make a list of all those who were harmed by your substance abuse and prepare yourself to apologize and make amends to all of them. This can be difficult, but if you’ve found yourself feeling isolated lately, steps eight and nine can help you improve your relationships and rejoin your community.

Little is known about the mechanism underlying the relationship between involvement in AA and subjective well-being. This study aims to verify whether in a sample of Polish AA participants involvement in AA is indirectly related to subjective well-being through existential well-being consisting of hope and meaning in life. The achieved results have confirmed that involvement in AA is positively related to existential well-being, which in turn positively predicts subjective well-being including life satisfaction as well as positive and negative affect. It was confirmed that AA involvement in self-help groups indirectly via existential well-being is related to subjective well-being.
